Monday saw Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu meet with opposition parties in a bid to lay the groundwork for a resolution to the country's long-running budget dispute. We came to remind him that we remain unsatisfied with the government's budget plan, because it lacks fiscal justice, and that cuts to social services and investments for the future are unacceptable to us. President Emmanuel Macron's decision to call snap legislative elections in the summer of 2024 resulted in a hung parliament. None of the three main blocs now has the votes to overcome opposition to their respective programs. And a political culture allergic to compromise has all but guaranteed deadlock on key issues like how to bring down the country's long-running budget deficit, which is currently the largest in Europe. Lecornu has promised not to use France's constitutional provision known as the 49.3 to force a budget through parliament. The 49.3 allows the government to unilaterally pass legislation at the cost of subjecting it to an immediate confidence vote. Votes of no confidence have already forced the collapse of Macron's two previous governments.
