Left-wing parties were conspicuously absent on Monday afternoon, as party representatives arrived for a meeting with the government in an effort to break the National Assembly deadlock. The left boycotting, they said, because they do not hold negotiations with the far right. After the Assembly's rejection of the Zucman wealth tax, which the Socialist Party had been pushing for, the party's leader said more concessions towards tax justice would need to be made to win them over. Just because we are not satisfied at the moment does not mean there is no way forward. I just mentioned a requirement, and that requirement is to respect the French people, to respect what they are asking of us, and to ensure that all the horrors that are still contained in the draft budget and in the draft social security financing bill disappear. Without the left's support, the bill is unlikely to find a majority in parliament. The economy minister warned Monday that compromise would need to come from everyone, meaning that ultimately they would need to agree on a budget that won't really satisfy anyone. He also called for avoiding overly complex systems. In the final budget there will need to be a gesture of fiscal justice. Fiscal justice is not heavy-handed nor overly complicated. There are already three or four different measures in the budget targeting high net worth individuals. Let's try to simplify all this. On Monday, MPs adopted a national rally amendment reinstating an exit or expatriation tax. But the unresolved issues on the revenue section of the budget will on Tuesday make way for the social security financing bill, for which debates are expected to be just as heated. MPs are working against the clock. The 2026 budget must be voted on by November 23rd at the latest.
