Magubulan Teddy Jagada, a former football player at St. Francis Xavier University, was sentenced to prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting two women in separate incidents on campus. The assaults, which occurred five months apart in 2022 and 2023, involved one case where the victim was choked to near unconsciousness.

The presiding judge, Frank Hoskins, determined that the seriousness of the offenses required a custodial sentence, despite requests for a community sentence. The judge also recommended that Jagada receive culturally sensitive counseling and support during his probation, and noted that his lawyer could apply for a shortened probation term if improvement is shown.

Magubulan Teddy Jagada was convicted of the sexual assaults after a jury trial earlier this year. Court was told that he forced himself on two women on two separate occasions. In one case he choked the woman to the point of almost unconsciousness to where she saw stars. Both assaults happened on the St. Ivex campus in the residences there. The Crown had been asking for a sentence of up to 36 months while Jagada's lawyer had asked that his client be able to serve his sentence in the community. In this case that community would have been Fort McMurray, Alberta where Jagada was living with his family. But Justice Frank Hoskins said the seriousness of these two assaults which occurred five months apart in 2022 and 2023 required a custodial sentence. The judge is recommending that Jagada be sent to a prison in Alberta so he can be close to his family but the judge pointed out that he doesn't have the authority to order that he can only recommend. He also referred extensively to the impact of race and cultural assessment or IRCA that was prepared in this case. The report noted that Jagada didn't have culturally appropriate supports while in Antigonish and felt increasing pressure and isolation around the time of the attacks. He was compensating by using a lot of cannabis the report quoted him as saying. Justice Hoskins said Jagada should be offered culturally sensitive counseling and support during his probation including instruction on consent.
