Storm chances are up, but that's not stopping the crowds. Leslie Hudson reports from Cocoa Beach as locals prep for a busy-and potentially stormy-holiday weekend.

Central Florida, particularly Cocoa Beach, is experiencing a surge in visitors for the end-of-summer holiday period. While many are flocking to the beaches to enjoy the sand and surf, weather forecasts indicate a high chance of rain and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoons and evenings. 

Local officials, including the Volusia County Chamber of Commerce, are encouraging visitors to explore indoor attractions such as the Marine Discovery Center as alternative activities. Additionally, travel costs are reportedly lower this holiday period, offering some relief for those planning trips within Florida or nationwide.

Florida's end of summer stormy send off

Now, we all know the Labor Day weekend officially is the end of summer. But here in Central Florida, in Cocoa Beach in particular, it is brisk business. Thousands and tens of thousands of people will descend upon the beaches over the holiday weekend to enjoy the sand and the surf, but potentially the storms as well. Sitting on a balcony, watch it rain. That's what we did for hours last night. It rained for hours. We sat there for hours and watched the rain come through, and the lightning. If you are headed out to the area beaches in Central Florida or even area-wide across the entire state, make sure you head out early to enjoy the sand and the surf. The rain chances significantly bump up as we head into each afternoon, and the showers and those embedded thunderstorms have been lasting well into the evening hours as well. We also talked to the Volusia County Chamber of Commerce. They have some tips, something you don't want to miss if you're headed to this area over the holiday weekend. There's just lots of great things to enjoy, even when the weather's not beach-going. We have the Marine Discovery Center, so if you've got little ones or you've got kids, it's like our own little version of SeaWorld. It's phenomenal. It's a great holiday weekend. I think everybody enjoys having a little extra time off work and kind of our last little hoo-rah for summer. So it's a great time to be at the beach and out on the boats in the water. If you are traveling here in the state of Florida or nationwide, there is good news for you. AAA reports that it is cheaper to travel this holiday weekend.
