Every summer, Tour de France viewers marvel at its acrobatic cameramen, balanced on the backs of motorcycles hurtling up mountain passes. They would be just as impressed if they saw the camera operators at work during the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.

A group of filmmakers undertook the task of documenting one of the world's most challenging ultramarathons, the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc, in Chamonix, France. The crew employed a combination of electric bikes, drones, and helmet-mounted cameras to capture live footage of the 1,500 runners traversing the mountainous terrain.

The camera team, consisting of 15 seasoned trail runners, relayed with each other to keep pace with the athletes, sometimes overtaking race leaders to obtain dynamic angles. All footage was transmitted to a control room in Chamonix and broadcast live online, reflecting the increasing sophistication and popularity of live ultramarathon coverage.

When running one of the hardest ultramarathons isn't enough, you can always get a job filming it. It's not easy. Undergoing an impressive physical feat on foot or by bike, all the while trying to get that perfect live shot. Back at the starting line, cyclists on electric-mounted bikes are preparing their kit, a hot spot in the backpack and satellite dish on the bike, before they head out to film a section of the race. We've got a 4G hotspot in the back to connect to the control room, and a GoPro on the helmet. There are 1,500 runners today, followed by drones in the air for wide shots, and headed up by the cyclists. One hand on the handlebars, one hand on their helmet with the camera attached. As we head into the steeper parts, cameramen on foot take over. Jean is in the midst of the best runners at the front of the pack. He needs to match their pace and stay in constant contact with the control room. To shoot different angles, sometimes you have to overtake the leader. They're paid 300 euros a day for their work, which can be dangerous. As evidenced by this cameraman, following the second-place runner down a steep hill. I thought I should probably calm down a bit, it's just a scratch, nothing serious. The whole camera crew is extremely fit, all 15 of them seasoned trail runners. They relay with each other, running 10 kilometres at a time. All the footage goes through this control room in nearby Chamonix, and is broadcast live on the internet with commentary. They have to know how to film, how to run, they have to look where they are going and where to point the camera, it's crazy. For big races like the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc, live broadcasts have become systematic and more and more elaborate, feeding the sport's booming popularity.
