After Typhoon Kalmegi swept through the Philippines, Liza Bekus returned to her home in Talisay City in the hardest-hit Cebu province. But the floor is all that's left of her house. Everything was destroyed. Only the flooring remained. Everything was washed out. We have no belongings. My children have nothing. Their uniforms, bags, and all of our things are gone. We borrowed money to buy our TV. Took us three weeks to pay back, and washing machine about a month to pay back. Poor my children, but it's now gone. Bekus is now trying to save what remains of the family's belongings and salvaging whatever she can sell to feed her seven children. I built that shack from the metal or iron sheets that lay scattered around and sold some of them so we can have money to buy some rice for us to eat. I dug them out so I have a roof to take shelter in, and I also dug our clothes out, cleaning them so we have something to wear daily. Residents in Cebu City also started cleaning up on Wednesday. Floods left vehicles piled up in the streets and homes steep in mud. Local resident Marlon Enriquez said he was surprised by how high the floods rose, with the water sending people scrambling onto their roofs for safety. The floodwaters quickly rushed in and we were not able to bring anything with us. This was the first time that has happened to us. I've been living here for almost 16 years, and it was the first time I've experienced the flooding. Typhoon Kalmegi barreled through central Philippines on Tuesday, killing at least 114 people and displacing thousands. The devastation comes just over a month after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck northern Cebu, killing dozens. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday declared a state of national calamity that allows government agencies wider access to emergency funds and faster delivery of aid to the affected people.
