A federal judge has ordered the release of Antonia Aguilar Maldonado, a 25-year-old mother of two from El Salvador, from ICE custody in Minnesota. Aguilar Maldonado, who has no criminal record and was detained since July 17, was held as the government sought her deportation for being in the country illegally. 

Her release was made possible after her church community raised the $10,000 bond set by an immigration court, though she initially remained in custody due to a Department of Homeland Security appeal. The federal judge's intervention allows her to return home to her children while her immigration proceedings continue.

The young mother of two overcome with emotion so relieved to be going home to care for her kids including the youngest who she is still nursing. I'm very happy I'm so grateful. First I'm grateful to God to be able to return me to my babies. Aguilar Maldonado was arrested by ICE agents July 17th. She was held behind bars inside the Kandiyohi County Jail in Wilmer for the last several weeks. The government is attempting to deport her as an alien in this country illegally. We know from court filings a 25 year old came to the United States from her native El Salvador as an unaccompanied minor back in 2016. She has no criminal record and those two young kids at home. An immigration court judge had set a bond for release at $10,000 but because the Department of Homeland Security appealed the ruling she was forced to remain in custody. That was until a senior federal district court judge stepped in on Tuesday and ordered Aguilar Maldonado's ultimate release while she fights her immigration proceedings. Here she is moments after walking free. Very hard, they were very difficult. Emotionally it was very hard. And Gloria is she ready to fight to stay in this country? Does she still want to fight and be here? For the moment, yes. And that was her attorney right there providing the translation.
