A federal judge in Fort Worth, Texas, is considering whether to approve a non-prosecution agreement between Boeing and the U.S. Department of Justice, following the fatal crashes of Boeing 737 aircraft in Indonesia and Ethiopia that resulted in 346 deaths. The proposed agreement would require Boeing to pay additional penalties and invest in safety measures, but would dismiss criminal charges against the company.

Family members of the victims, who have traveled from around the world, are urging the judge to reject the agreement, arguing that it does not hold Boeing sufficiently accountable and lacks proper safety oversight. An attorney representing the families stated that the deal fails to provide adequate monitoring of Boeing's safety practices.

They want Boeing to face criminal prosecution today. They're going before the judge himself to testify and have their voices heard. 346 people died in the Boeing 7 37 crashes in Indonesia in 2018 and Ethiopia in 2019. U. S prosecutors initially charged the aircraft manufacturer with conspiracy to commit fraud after it found faulty sensor readings led to those deadly crashes. In December 2024, Boeing and the Department of Justice reached a plea deal. The families objected to it, and the judge ultimately denied it. The federal government now pursuing a non prosecution agreement. It would ask Boeing to pay an additional $243.6 million as a penalty along with 445 million to the families and make additional investments in safety. In exchange, the D O J would dismiss the criminal charges today. Family members are asking Judge Reed O'Connor to reject that agreement and this morning, one of the mothers explained why they want Boeing to face trial. If you don't hold people accountable for what they're doing for killing 346 people, then more corporations will act with impunity and disregard the safety of passengers and other human beings who are customers of other corporations. An attorney for the families says the agreement does not hold Boeing accountable and fails to provide appropriate safety monitoring of the company. Those family members, by the way, traveled here to Fort Worth from all over the world coming from Ireland, Canada, Kenya, just to name a few of the locations. They say they are optimistic going into that courtroom today.
