With big smiles and colorful backpacks, tens of thousands of students in the Los Angeles Unified School District walked into their first day of class. But heading into this new academic year, some families say they are living in fear. Nidia Cavazos reports.

Some parents, particularly those who are undocumented, have expressed fear for their families' safety and have made contingency plans in case of detention or deportation. 

The Los Angeles school district has implemented 'safe zones' outside 100 schools in Latino-majority areas, with volunteers and officers monitoring for federal immigration activity. Despite assurances from federal officials that schools will not be targeted, recent incidents, such as the temporary detention of a 15-year-old student with disabilities, have intensified concerns. The district superintendent emphasized the importance of protecting students and hopes the new measures will provide reassurance to families.

It's sad to talk about these plans. Immigration enforcement activity has picked up across L. A. In July, agents on horseback swarmed MacArthur Park near multiple schools. Some undocumented mothers say they aren't willing to risk sending their kids to school at all. I'm scared because I wouldn't be able to handle getting separated from them. I'm on a sidewalk near downtown L. A. That Children and their parents used to walk to school, but it's also right outside of Home Depot that has been raided frequently over the summer and federal agents continue to patrol this Latino majority area. If they do not possess a signed judicial warrant, they do not have access to have a conversation with anyone, staff member or student or parent. L. A. School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho says the district has taken measures to protect families implementing safe zones outside 100 schools in Latino majority areas where volunteers and officers will watch for federal immigration activity. Monday, a 15 year old student with disabilities was detained by federal agents outside an area high school. They started pointing guns at us. So yeah, not the moment when they opened our door. My mom just told me to not move or anything. He was quickly released. An official said agents were conducting a targeted operation on a suspected Ms 13 pledge with prior criminal convictions. The Trump administration has stressed schools will not be targeted. This administration wants to ensure that school Children across the country and every city from Los Angeles to D. C. Can go to school safely. Why have immigration enforcement actions so close to schools where a 16 year old, a 15 year old may actually be misidentified as an adult. Should we not have enough empathy and compassion our hearts to spare Children that type of trauma in his district, an estimated one in five students are part of an immigrant family.
