All this behind me, every white headstone is a life lost in Europe's worst massacres since the Holocaust. I'm in Srebrenica, where 8,372 people, mostly men and boys, were killed in just seven days. They were Muslim civilians. They had sought refuge in what's supposed to be a UN protected zone, but protection never came. Instead, they were executed, their bodies dumped in mass graves. To hide the scale of the crime, bodies were dismembered and moved to secondary and even tertiary graves. Investigators found many true aerial images shared by US officials that revealed the first mass grave sites. So far, more than 80 mass graves have been uncovered, but a thousand people are still missing and most who are found are laid to rest with only fragments, a single bone sometimes, all that's left of a life. This year, just seven victims are being buried, the lowest number so far. As time passes, finding new remains becomes harder as silence still protects the perpetrators. Families spend one final moment beside these green coffins. They waited decades for this goodbye. It feels like it just happened. I lost my whole family, my husband, my father, my cousins, and I still haven't found my brother. This is a burial of Mavlida's husband 30 years later with a grave that's still incomplete. The oldest victim to be buried this year was 67-year-old Fata Bektic, all that was recovered of her a single bone. Srebrenica is officially recognized as a genocide by two international courts and the United Nations. Crime on European soil, decades after world promised never again. 30 years on, the world returns to remember. But some here say the same failures are repeating, pointing to Gaza and the silence around it. From the graves still being filled to those marred with a white stone, this is not just a memorial, it's a warning that memory alone is not enough to stop history from repeating.
