A large tree fell on Valley Road in Stamford, Connecticut, causing widespread power outages for Eversource customers. The incident occurred around 4 a.m., initially leaving over 1,400 residents without electricity. 

Crews from Eversource, local tree companies, and the fire department have restored power to about two-thirds of those affected, but over 550 customers remain without service. Residents are coping with the outage during cold weather, and no injuries have been reported. Eversource aims to restore full power before noon.

A chunk of those outages are in Stanford. News 12's Greg Thompson is there. Greg, what kind of progress are crews making with that downed tree? Slow and steady, but at least they are making progress. If you can see behind me, we got a party going on right here. We got Eversource crews, we got Tree Company crews, we got even the fire department here. Everyone coming to hang out and try and get something going here. We'll show you exactly what they're dealing with a little further down the road where we were earlier this morning before getting kicked out to let them do the work. So that giant tree came down right here on Valley Road a little before it turns into Highland Road. Now, when that first came down right around 4 a.m., Eversource listed over 1,400 customers all without power right in this area here of Stanford. Now, luckily we're told crews were able to divert some of the electricity and get it back online for about 2 1⁄3 of those people, but still over 550 people throughout the morning have been dealing with not having any power here. Now, like we said, crews are on the scene dealing with that tree, which had fallen onto a car. So trying to get some of that cleaned up, hoping to get it back online, but now obviously a really cold day for people to be dealing with without any of the power. And some of the people around here, they said, you know, they are surprised this would happen. They said, even though it was an old tree, they've never had anything like that happen on this street over here. So now they're just trying to figure out a way to stay warm. Blankets, honestly, I have one candle. I wasn't fully prepared for this, but just blankets and honestly snuggling up with my dogs. I'm just glad no one was hurt. And I mean, property can be replaced, but you know, it's just very scary. Yeah, definitely very scary. Lucky that didn't happen during the day when there's people out and about here, especially such a residential area, this big apartment complex. That's where a lot of the outages are, but also some of the houses around here. Now, crews do say Eversource is telling us they hope to get power back online before noon. As you saw in that video, a lot of work and a lot that has to be done. So hopefully sooner than later, everyone is back getting warm or at least for now has somewhere to go.
