Passengers at Paris's Gare du Nord described frustration over the lack of information and the high cost of alternative transport and accommodation. Eurostar's compensation has been reported as insufficient to cover the additional expenses incurred by travelers, many of whom remain determined to reach their destinations for holiday celebrations.

But just hours before New Year's Eve, Eurostar has this afternoon announced it is cancelling all of its trains connecting London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, this due to a major power supply issue in the Channel Tunnel. Now, our reporter Olivia Bizeau has made her way to Gare du Nord to talk to stranded passengers this afternoon and get a sense of the atmosphere. Olivia is with me now. Olivia, just give us a sense of what's going on. Hi, Nadia. There's definitely a huge sense of frustration here at the Gare du Nord. There are hundreds of people who've been stranded. There's a lot of uncertainty. I'm here with a couple of Americans, Lavinia and Dan, who had planned a trip to London. Can you tell us a bit about your experience? Yeah, so we get here and they basically tell us that all trains are cancelled today, which is really scary because we have plans starting tonight that we had to be there for. All of our friends are meeting up. And, you know, we already have pre-planned plans. And it's just frustrating because we don't know what the answer is going to be. Like, are we going to be able to get on a train? Do we have to now get on a flight? Like, there's just not really any certainty or clarity from the company. And what about the financial cost of these disruptions? Oh, huge. I looked at flights today. A thousand dollars, US dollars. If you look at tomorrow, you try to take a one stopper, it's going to be like six hundred dollars. Trains, we don't know what, there's no outlook what that's going to be tomorrow if it's still cancelled. And then ferries, like you talk about renting cars, one way fees, ferry tickets, another car when you get to like Portsmouth or whatever port over there. And, you know, just trying to find find how to get rid of that. Like, it's just cost that up pretty big, very quickly. So maybe, I don't know, a thousand, fifteen hundred dollars easy to try to find any other way right now. And even if we stay in Paris another night, the money that the company is giving us isn't even going to cover half of a hotel room. So it's just like, you know, our sunken cost of what we've already spent to be in London and then our cost of being here for much longer during the holidays, too, when it's peak pricing. And are you still determined to try and get to London for your New Year's Eve plans? Yeah, I mean, it's also one of our best friend's 30th birthday. So we really want to be there for him. And, you know, all of our friends are getting together. So we're going to have FOMO if we're not there with our friends. As you know, as a cultural experience, like it was our British friends hosting us. And so, you know, as Americans, we always try to go out and see the rest of the world. And so this is our opportunity to see that, celebrate a holiday with them. And we don't want to miss the opportunity. Thank you so much. Yeah, I appreciate it. I'm sure you're all excited about the disruptions. So this American couple story is just one of almost 8000 people who've been disrupted by these cancellations here today.
