Since 2015, the Saudi-backed Yemeni Council has been in conflict with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The separatist group, STC, was initially part of that Saudi-led alliance against the Houthis. But it decided to split from it. Now seeking self-rule in the south and to recreate an independent state of southern Yemen, it has in recent weeks been gaining ground. The UAE has denied the accusations. They say the shipment did not contain any weapons and that the vehicles were not intended for any Yemeni groups. Nonetheless, the incident further strains ties between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, which now back competing sides in Yemen.
