This comes after Trump said a peace deal was 95% done. Zelenskyy says the U.S. is offering Ukraine a 15-year security guarantee, though he'd prefer 50 years. We need these guarantees from the United States because it will set the bar for everybody else. And without U.S. being in these guarantees, I don't think none of the Europeans will be ready to be the first one to go to the trenches, basically. What's still at issue? Territorial control of Zaporizhia in the south of Ukraine and the Donbass region in the eastern part of the country, where Putin is directing troops. The main reason that Putin is trying to ask for this right now at this stage is because the part of Donbass that Ukraine holds is heavily fortified. That territory a longstanding goal for Putin. This is a core Russian war objective. It has been restated multiple times. If they don't get it through diplomacy, they will take it through war. Trump also says he spoke with Putin Monday and had what he called a very good talk. As for Zelenskyy, he says he will meet with European leaders in the coming days. Anis Heidari, CBC News, Calgary.
