The investigation found that while several MEPs, including Virginie Giraud, were sanctioned in 2021 for participating in irregular election observation trips, no formal blacklist was ever created.

The sanctions temporarily barred the MEPs from official election observation missions until the end of 2021 and warned of possible suspension for further unofficial activities. According to a source, Giraud is currently not restricted from participating in such missions organized by the European Parliament.

Virginie Giraud, a member of the European Parliament from the Conservative Patriots for Europe group, has claimed she is a target of a disinformation campaign. On X, she announced her plan to file a complaint against several media outlets for supposedly intentionally spreading defamatory claims about her. This includes the allegation that she was placed on a blacklist by the European Parliament, which she qualifies as completely false. According to Giraud, these claims are part of a bid to discredit her ahead of France's local elections in March, where she plans to run for mayor in the city of Strasbourg. So where do these accusations come from? Well, in 2021, the EU Observer published an investigation claiming that the European Parliament has sanctioned Giraud and seven other MEPs for allegedly taking part in irregular election observation trips. According to the report, five MEPs from France's national rally, including Giraud, were accused of organising so-called sham observation missions during foreign elections held notably in Russian-occupied Crimea. In reality, no formal blacklist was ever established. But Giraud, and along with the MEPs listed in the investigation, were handed sanctions, banning them from participating in European Parliament observation missions until the end of 2021. They were also warned that if they took part in other unofficial election observation activities, they could face suspension for the remainder of their term. A source confirmed to the Cube that President Metzola has indeed stated that Giraud is currently not restricted in any way from participating in election observation missions organised by the European Parliament.

Analysts say the discussions could be pivotal in clarifying U.S. intentions, easing tensions and reinforcing commitments to Greenland’s sovereignty in the face of strategic interests from Washington.
