A chemical explosion occurred at the Borden Dairy Plant in London, Kentucky, prompting a swift response from the local fire department. The incident involved the release of 'hyperflex,' an acidic sanitizer containing phosphoric and nitric acids, which is corrosive and can cause health issues upon contact.

Four individuals at the plant sustained injuries, including chemical burns and a broken leg, but none of the injuries are considered life-threatening. Decontamination procedures are ongoing at both the plant and the hospital where the injured were taken. The Borden Dairy Plant is one of four facilities owned by Borden, a company headquartered in Dallas with approximately 1,700 employees.

Developing story out of Kentucky in the town of London, a chemical explosion caused firefighters to scramble. So CBS News correspondent Chanel Call monitoring this situation, what happened there? So Reid, this happened at around seven o'clock this morning at the Borden Dairy Plant in London, Kentucky. Just to put this into perspective, that's about 150 miles southeast of Louisville. The London Fire Department is saying that it responded to reports of a chemical release and explosion there. It also added that fire units quickly got control of the scene. They also say that they're working on decontamination operations at both the plant and the hospital that they sent patients to. And Reid, that's because the chemical involved in this explosion is something called hyperflex, which is an acidic sanitizer. So we know that it contains phosphoric acid and nitric acid. It's also, I should note, corrosive. So if you have direct contact with this, it can cause some adverse health effects, which is why there was concern about potential exposure here. Now, the fire department is saying, Reid, that four people at the plant, they were injured. None of those injuries we know are life-threatening. I can tell you, some people suffered some chemical burns. We know one of the four people suffered a broken leg. The plant, just to let you know, is one of four milk plants that are owned by Borden. It's headquartered in Dallas. And according to the company's website, Borden also has about 1,700 employees. They make more than 35 dairy products. We all know that Borden logo.
