A former Chicago Public Schools student is suing the district accusing it of hiring a known gang member with several previous criminal charges who eventually raped her.

The lawsuit claims the district failed to follow its own background check procedures, allowing Romel Campo Verde, who had been arrested 16 times over two decades, to work at Hergott Career Academy. The student alleges that Campo Verde groomed her as a freshman, provided her with alcohol, and assaulted her inside his RV. CPS has stated it cannot comment on ongoing litigation but emphasized that student safety is a priority. The accused security guard is currently under house arrest and is scheduled to appear in court.

And a Fox 32 follow-up, a former CPS student is suing, saying the district put a known gang member in charge of protecting kids. That security guard is now charged with raping her, and today we learn more about the accusations. The lawsuit claims Chicago Public Schools violated its own rules, skipping critical steps in a required background check. The guard, Romel Campo Verde, was arrested 16 times over 20 years, including charges of battery, burglary, and assault with a weapon. The student who met him at Hergott Career Academy says he started grooming her as a freshman through text, gave her alcohol, and later raped her inside his RV. Her attorney says all the warning signs were there, and CPS ignored them all. This will stay with her for the rest of her life. And as she gets older, the damages that it causes, it changes and fluctuates over time. So one thing that she's feeling now, which is devastation, may change later into different things, including potentially different mental health diagnoses and other problems. CPS says they cannot talk while this case plays out in court, but that student's safety is priority. That security guard is out on house arrest. He's due back in court on the 25th.
