Germany is accusing French manufacturer Dassault of blocking negotiations over the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project.

The Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a joint project launched by France, Germany, and Spain to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet, is facing new challenges due to a dispute over management control. The German defence ministry has accused French industry, particularly Dassault, of blocking progress by demanding sole management of the programme, a move unlikely to be accepted by other partners.

As tensions rise, some German officials have suggested withdrawing from the project and joining a rival initiative with Italy, the UK, and Japan, or increasing purchases of American F-35 jets. Despite these disagreements, leaders from France and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to FCAS, while acknowledging that adjustments to the programme may be necessary to move forward.

Europe's new fighter jet at risk amidst ownership disputes

The AFCAS programme faces fresh uncertainty following a dispute between its manufacturers. Launched in 2017 by France, Germany and Spain, this project aims to strengthen European defence by developing a sixth-generation fighter aircraft supported by interconnected drones within a combat cloud. The German defence ministry accused French industry of blocking the project after Dassault's CEO called for single management of the fighter jet programme. However, it is unlikely that Dassault will get full control of the programme. There are other pillars of this project, for example a combat cloud, a digital infrastructure to exchange information, to connect to other aircraft, and in particular to drones that should also be developed, notably by Airbus and the German side. Following the management dispute, some German voices are threatening to leave the project. Germany could turn to a rival project for a sixth-generation fighter jet developed by Italy, the UK and Japan. Other transatlantic-minded German voices are arguing in favour of buying more American F-35s, to the detriment of Europe's strategic autonomy. It will have a bilateral cost for the French-German relationship, but also for European sovereignty The FCAS was discussed on Friday at the Franco-German Council of Ministers in Toulon.
