Recent data shows a significant rise in heat-related deaths among the elderly, with climate researchers attributing the rapid warming to both proximity to the Arctic and cleaner air allowing more sunlight to reach the surface.

Experts warn that traditional European housing is not designed to cope with higher temperatures, as many homes are built to retain heat rather than cool down. Urban planners and climate scientists are calling for urgent changes in building design and city planning, including increased greenery and improved ventilation, to better protect residents from the intensifying effects of climate change.

When temperatures hit 40 degrees in Western Europe, you know something's gone wrong with the planet. Wildfires destroying large areas around Marseille, extreme drought in Spain and Greece, scenes like these have become increasingly common. Climate researchers found that last June was the third hottest ever recorded. The Dutch government immediately released a national heatwave plan, alerting people on the symptoms of overheating. The United Nations published a report this week, showing that there are 85% more heat-related deaths among the elderly since the 1990s. I'm going to talk about this with Ellie Otter, how she as a 75-year-old is coping. It was horrible. I suffered quite a lot. My legs were swollen and they became very heavy, so I couldn't do anything. I was just sitting there. To find out why the temperatures are rising, I'm speaking to a climate scientist here at the National Weather Institute in the Netherlands. So what is the reason that the temperature is rising twice as fast in Europe? The Arctic is actually warming even faster than Europe, and we're very close to the Arctic. But one other interesting reason is that the air is much cleaner in recent decades in Europe. So we have more sunlight, so it's good for renewable energy. We can see it in our solar panels, but the continent is warming faster because of that. If this is the new reality, what does that mean for people's housing? They've long been built to keep the heat inside and not to cool off. I'm going to find out, to talk to a researcher on climate-resilient cities. Would you say that they are built in a climate-proof way? No, unfortunately not. So these houses are currently built. However, they have really, really, really big windows. And that makes that the sun will shine in the apartments the whole day. And we have quite a lot of limitations with getting the warm air out during the night. She says a warmer Europe requires a different mindset. Not only looking at rising sea levels, but constructing houses with more green and better ventilation. With one-third of the Netherlands lying below sea level, the only way for the Dutch is up. But strengthening these dikes won't protect them from the heat. So while Europe is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the planet, nobody seems to be really prepared. Step fast on Al Jazeera near Amsterdam.
