Europe’s emerging drug threats span everything from fake medicines, cocaine busts, and synthetic weed, according to a new report.

A recent annual report from the EU's drug agency highlights growing challenges in tackling illegal drug use across Europe. The report notes a rise in the availability and consumption of cocaine, with around 4.6 million adults using the drug and wastewater analysis confirming increased human consumption. 

Additionally, the agency has identified the emergence of 88 synthetic opioids since 2009, some of which mimic real medicines and pose significant risks of poisoning due to their high potency—up to 400 times stronger than morphine. The market for illicit drugs has broadened to include a wider range of synthetic substances, while cannabis remains the most used drug, with its average THC content doubling over the past decade.

EU struggling to cope with illegal drug problem

More accessible cocaine and counterfeit painkillers. The EU's drug agency is sounding the alarm. In its annual report published on Thursday, the agency also refers to a constantly changing market which increases the health and safety risks. Last year, cocaine was the stimulant drug most commonly used by around 4.6 million adults. What we observe is that there is an increase in the availability that we can assess, for instance, with the seizures. At the same time, using new or recent methodology, that is to waste water analysis, we see that there is a clear increase in the human consumption of cocaine. Since 2009, the European agency has also seen the arrival of 88 synthetic opioids. These substances sometimes imitate real medicines, increasing the risk of counterfeiting and therefore poisoning. One of the characteristics is that they can be up to 400 times more potent than morphine, but they may also be extremely more toxic, which means that all together, if we put the stimulants, the synthetic drugs, the synthetic cantinols and the synthetic opioids and cannabinoids overall, there is a broadened offer of substances on the market. Cannabis was still the drug most used by 24 million adults last year, but the agency points out that the average THC content, the psychoactive component, has doubled in a decade.
