The EU says it wants to breathe life back into the two-state solution. Its foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, will publish a new roadmap, with an international peace conference as a starting point. He said the process must start with or without Israeli or Palestinian participation, and in light of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's repeated rejection of Palestinian statehood, issued this challenge. We have to discuss, even if they don't disagree, even if they disagree, they have to come here and they will discuss with us and we will study which other solutions they have in mind. Which are the other solutions they have in mind? To make all the Palestinians live, to kill off them, 25,000 already in Gaza, 70 percent are women and children. There were predictable condemnations of the humanitarian crisis, calls for ceasefire and for Hamas to release the hostages, but the focus here was an insistence there is only one long-term solution. Israel can only have security when the Palestinians can have security and dignity. And the Palestinians can only live in dignity, security and freedom when Israel has security. That is why the two-state solution is the only solution. And all those who want to have none of it haven't come up with an alternative so far. Israel's foreign minister attended the morning session with his focus on freeing hostages and dismantling Hamas. The Palestinian foreign minister attended in the afternoon. They didn't meet each other. And that's why, you know, I came here in order just to tell my colleagues, European colleagues, that the most important action to be undertaken is a ceasefire. We have to call collectively for a ceasefire. We cannot accept anything less. We cannot be hesitant about a ceasefire. Foreign ministers from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan ensured a crucial regional perspective. EU foreign ministers joined the growing clamor for an end to the fighting and a viable peace process. Monday's talks show the bloc wants to play an active role. But it must realize such plans, like all the ones that have gone before, stand little chance of success without a new Israeli government and Hamas ceding control of Gaza.
