Egyptian authorities have announced a presidential pardon for Alaa Abdel Fattah, a well-known activist who played a significant role in the 2011 Arab Spring protests. Abdel Fattah, who holds both Egyptian and British citizenship, has spent most of the last ten years in prison, most recently serving a five-year sentence for spreading false information. 

His prolonged detention drew attention to Egypt's human rights situation and led to a lengthy hunger strike by his mother, Laila Swaif. The pardon follows a recent review of a petition for his release, and Abdel Fattah is expected to be freed after the decision is formally published. Five other prisoners were also included in the presidential pardon.

Egyptian authorities on Monday announced the presidential pardon of prominent activist Alaa Abdel Fattah. Abdel Fattah was a leading voice in the country's 2011 Arab Spring uprising. Over the years, Abdel Fattah became emblematic of Egypt's democratic backsliding. His detention prompted his mother, Laila Swaif, to engage in a 10-month hunger strike which left her seriously ill. Earlier this month, President Sisi ordered authorities to review a petition calling for the release of Abdel Fattah. The president's office on Monday said five other prisoners were also pardoned. Abdel Fattah's lawyer said he should be released after the decision is officially published, possibly within the next two days.
