The vessel, one of two discovered near the Great Pyramid in 1954, is being restored in partnership with Japanese collaborators, reflecting a commitment to preserving Egypt's historical artifacts.

The restoration project involves piecing together 1,650 wooden parts and is expected to take approximately four years. The museum, which houses nearly 50,000 artifacts including treasures from Tutankhamun's tomb, offers this unique experience as part of its mission to engage the public with Egypt's rich heritage.

Preserving this type of antiquity with this care, together with the Japanese partners with whom we work together on many projects, is not only a sign but it reflects the commitment of both parties to commit to preserve and also maintain the history in a very good shape. The boat was one of two discovered in 1954 opposite the southern side of the Great Pyramid. The excavation of its wooden parts began in 2014, according to the museum. The restoration work is taking place at the facility touted as the world's largest at its inauguration in November. It's home to nearly 50,000 artefacts, including the collection of treasures from the tomb of the famed king Tutankhamun, which was discovered in 1922. Engineers have to piece together 1,650 parts. We are witnessing today the most important, or let me phrase it as one of the most important, restoration projects in the 21st century. The assembly of the 42-metre long vessel is expected to take around four years, according to Isa Zeidan, the head of restoration at the museum. We have a plan to take four years to assemble the ship. In a unique first for the Grand Egyptian Museum, visitors will have a live experience of the ship's assembly. King Khufu ruled ancient Egypt more than 4,500 years ago and built the Great Pyramid of Giza.
