In Matam, Senegal, where extreme heat persists almost year-round, an association collaborating with the Senegalese community in France is building eco-friendly homes using traditional designs to keep interiors cool without relying on electricity.

In Agnam Lidubi, a village in northeastern Senegal, residents are moving into homes built using Nubian vault architecture, a method that uses raw earth and thick walls to provide natural cooling in a region with extreme heat. The initiative, led by the Association for the Development of Agnam Lidubi and supported by a master builder from Burkina Faso, has already resulted in 29 homes for nearly 300 residents, with more under construction.

These eco-friendly homes are not only more affordable than cement structures but also minimize environmental impact by using local materials and reducing the need for wood, thus helping to combat deforestation. The project has transformed the village, with residents now advocating for this sustainable building method as a way to adapt to climate challenges.

Eco-friendly homes offer climate resilience in Senegal

In Agnam Lidubi in northeastern Senegal, Alusenu and his family now live in a house built from raw earth, using Nubian vault architecture. Their home naturally stays cooler, in a region where temperatures regularly reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. I'm very happy with this new house. It's very different from the cement houses we had before. The construction method and architecture are better suited to the high temperatures here and our way of life. These homes were built with the support of the Association for the Development of Agnam Lidubi, a community living in France. So far 29 houses have been constructed for nearly 300 residents of the village. Richard, an entrepreneur specialising in Nubian vaults from Burkina Faso, is the master builder behind these homes. We have very thick walls that are 60 centimetres thick. This keeps out heat and humidity. When it's hot outside, when you come inside, you feel the coolness. That's the advantage of the Nubian vault. It's also cheaper than cement construction because we have the earth on site. The project has completely transformed the village, where residents are now promoting this type of more environmentally friendly construction. With this project, we are using local resources. There are no negative consequences for the environment. What's more, constructing these Nubian vault buildings limits the use of wood and helps combat deforestation. With a cost of over 150,000 euros, around 30 other houses of this type are currently under construction in the village, with completion scheduled for 2029.
