A weather system tracking out of Canada is set to bring early-season snowfall to parts of the northern United States, including the Dakotas, Minnesota, and areas near the Great Lakes. Accumulations will range from a coating to an inch in cities like Chicago and Detroit, with heavier totals of one to three inches or more farther north, and lake effect snow developing as the system moves away.

Lake effect snow bands are expected to persist through the start of the week, with some areas south and east of Erie, Pennsylvania, potentially receiving three to six inches, and isolated spots up to one foot. The primary hazard will be snow squalls, which can cause sudden drops in visibility and create dangerous driving conditions.

Now behind this system, the impact it has is that cooler air behind the front that paves the way for big story starting tomorrow. The snow. This is your overall footprint, but let's break it down piece by piece on future radar. So taking a look at this system moving out of Canada into the Dakotas, we start off with snow overnight, but then we fast forward to 830 and we get into the Great Lakes more. Specifically, we're into Minnesota into Northern Isle with accumulating snowfall but as we move closer to places like Chicago and closer to the lakes themselves, we have more of the rain switching over to snowfall. Rain, some snowflakes mixed in. We're talking about the Notre Dame game on Saturday should be mostly rain. We don't switch over there until the overnight you can see we're at 10 PM. Chicago seeing some snowflakes Detroit. Both of you will get a coding to an inch overall but will have more significant accumulations farther to the north. Significant accumulations farther to the north. But when I say more significant, I mean a couple inches at the most. So now we're at Sunday 5 AM. There's a switch that's going to happen throughout the day. We still have our system moving through the same one I pointed out the beginning of the loop here. But now by 9 PM we're seeing the switch over to lake effect snow. No longer that storm system, that area of low pressure driving things. Instead, it's the after effects of that moving over the relatively warmer Great Lakes. This continues through Monday and then into Tuesday you can see some of the heavier snow bands that we're going to see South and East of places like Erie, Pennsylvania. Two snow maps to show you breaking it down piece by piece so Saturday night through Sunday night. Here's what we're talking about, and this is anybody that gets one to three plus inches of snow. So if you're coding to an inch like Chicago and Detroit, you're not quite on the map here. Then we go ahead to the lake effect snow. And what to expect here? The snow totals are higher. That's what we expect with lake effect, but we're not talking about several feet of snow. I know when I hear lake effect, that's what I think of. And many of you who live in areas that get lake effect snow, that's probably what you think of. But we're talking three to six is our max category here. Yakima other local storm acts one foot of snow. One thing to keep in mind though, you might be thinking, OK, this is no big deals for snow this season. No, no big impacts. It's the snow squalls you really need to watch out for. That's where we're talking about that rapid drop in visibility. That's where you get car crashes and really dangerous situations.
