Wildfires have erupted across at least 11 states in the western United States, fueled by critically dry landscapes and high temperatures. More than 80 fires are currently active, with high winds and low humidity complicating firefighting efforts.

Significant damage has occurred, including the destruction of the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and visitor center on the North Rim. Other fires, such as the White Sage Fire, have rapidly expanded, leading to highway closures and evacuations. In southeastern Utah, a firenado destroyed a home and several buildings. Additionally, smoke from Canadian wildfires has led to unhealthy air quality levels in the upper Midwest, increasing demand for inhalers and eye drops.

Now to the expanding wildfire threat out west. Critically dry landscapes and spiking temperatures are fueling flames in at least 11 states. CBS's Elyse Preston is in Los Angeles and monitoring those fires for us tonight, Elyse. Jerica, right now there are more than 80 wildfires burning in California and across the west. High winds and low humidity are making it tougher for hundreds of firefighters battling the flames. Fierce flames from the Dragon Bravo fire destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim. The only lodge inside the park's North Rim was originally built in the 1920s. It was rebuilt in the 1930s after a fire with much of the original stonework. The visitor center also gone. Park employees all got out safely. The White Sage Fire, roaring 30 miles north, doubled in size within the last 24 hours. It has now scorched more than 40,000 acres. The fire has forced highway closures and evacuations, but no structures have burned. On the South Rim of the canyon, a wildfire also growing this weekend, burning at least 3,500 acres. In southeastern Utah, a firenado ripped through a home. 8,300 acres have been destroyed, including at least five buildings. And an unwelcome return in the upper Midwest. Drifting smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed the region this weekend and sent air quality alerts to unhealthy and dangerous levels. Now, millions across the country are under those air quality alerts. Pharmacists in those impacted regions say the demand for inhalers and eye drops is up. Jerica.
