Spilling out of a now-bogged, stolen ute in Wyndham Vale, they scramble in the dark, one taking a tumble during the getaway, before the dog squad quickly closed in. Just 24 hours later, officers approach a group of cars in a tarnate car park, when one driver reverses into a police vehicle and takes off, narrowly missing an officer. Air wing tracks their every move, watching as a passenger jumps out, while the car is still travelling at speed. The driver pulls over and tries to hide behind a backyard fence. Officers arrest him without incident. Inside the vehicle, they find a handgun, ammunition, cocaine and MDMA, and more than $54,000 in cash. The 21-year-old Essendon man is now behind bars. Just an hour later, another pursuit. A car pulls off the Western Ring Road after allegedly reaching speeds up to 150km an hour. Police intercepted more than 140 vehicles during the blitz, stopping unlicensed and stolen cars before more crimes could unfold. Victoria is currently the country's car crime capital, with thefts up more than 50% in the past year. The work that the Chief Commissioner is undertaking in overhauling Victoria Police to get more police out on the streets to respond very proactively to incidences of crime is exactly what has happened.
