Drivers in Colorado are being cautioned to prepare for potentially hazardous winter conditions as a snowstorm is expected to affect the high country, especially along the I-70 corridor. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) notes that while warmer weather and less snow have kept travel efficient so far, changing weather overnight may complicate return trips for holiday travelers.

CDOT reports that last year over 350,000 vehicles passed through the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels during the holiday period, and this year's traffic could be impacted by lower snow levels. Officials recommend drivers use snow tires, drive slowly, and allow extra time for their journeys, especially with another travel surge anticipated around New Year's Eve.

Our Denver sevens Maggie brian checking in with drivers along I-70 in Idaho Springs tonight. Plus she's hearing from seed on about how this warmer weather we've had is impacting holiday travel this year. Travel along I-70 has been pretty smooth on saturday as people start heading home from holiday festivities. That's partly because of a lack of snow here in the high country. C dot says we may not see as much traffic this holiday season because there's just less snow at ski resorts. But travelers should be extra cautious going into late saturday night and early sunday morning as snow, wind and ice could make conditions a little more dangerous with full suitcases and packed cars. We have my mom, my stepdad, her dad, her mom, her sister and fiance. Travelers are hitting the road post holiday. We're coming back from snowmobiles in Winter Park at a time when patience and preparedness is key, especially along I-70. How do you prepare your car for the winter? Uh usually get good tires would be a recommendation. The big deal is snow tires. Just drive slow. If you see snow, I see other people slowing down, just prepare. It's gonna take you longer to get there this holiday season. Less snow in places like Idaho Springs is keeping travel efficient. Not too bad, really not bad at all. It was really warm. We came in christmas day. So it's like record high, not too bad, but snow in the tunnel, a lot of snow. But C dot says conditions will likely change overnight into sunday morning as a cold front makes its way to the I-70 corridor and into the front range. We anticipate tomorrow afternoon seeing a surge in traffic and that could be more complicated with any snow that might fall overnight into the morning. C dot says last year more than 350,000 drivers passed through the Eisenhower johnson tunnels from December 23rd to the 31st. This year, the warmer weather could impact those numbers. I don't know whether it will increase or decrease. I do know that we don't have the snow up on the slopes the way that we've had in prior years. But like always make sure you leave early and take your time. Drivers in the high country should be prepared for anything. Drive slower than you think you need to, but not so slow that you're holding everyone up. And of course, once this wave of busy holiday travel passes this weekend, travelers should be prepared for another spike on new year's eve in Idaho Springs. I'm Maggie bryan Denver seven
