The start of Labor Day weekend is a wet one across the Gulf.

The southeastern United States is experiencing severe weather, with heavy downpours and thunderstorms leading to flash flooding risks from Texas through Florida and into the Carolinas. These conditions are causing airport delays, localized street flooding, and hazardous surf along the east coast. 

Meanwhile, a surge of cool Canadian air is bringing temperatures well below average to the Great Lakes and Northeast, with some areas seeing record-challenging lows. While severe storms are being monitored in the northern plains and parts of the high plains, the southeast continues to see pockets of heavy rainfall, particularly in cities like New Orleans and Miami.

Drenching storms target the Gulf Coast and Florida

Holiday weekend travelers in the southeast face that risk of flash flooding from Texas to Florida and into the Carolinas. We got heavy downpours and storms bringing airport delays and localized street flooding. Rough surf and rip currents are also expected beginning especially Sunday for the east coast. And farther to the north a surge of cool Canadian air is settling over the Great Lakes and the northeast. Temperatures are going to run about 10 to 15 degrees below the historical averages with record challenging lows and crisp days for the holiday weekend. We can take you now live 20 years after a disaster struck. Here's New Orleans right now and well life very different right now compared to 20 years ago. We are dealing with some rain showers and thunderstorms though. Yeah a couple showers out there. You can see not a whole lot of folks with umbrellas. Some guys right there not even wearing shirts. So there you go that's one way to deal with the rainfall here on a Friday afternoon in New Orleans. Winds are picking up a little bit as well. You can see some of those flags right there gusting flapping just a little bit. But overall yes we are tracking multiple severe thunderstorm warnings here to get you into the forecast. We'll go and start here across the northern plains. This is some of the strongest storms that we've seen so far this afternoon as I freeze frame the radar. Taking a closer look here this is Luke County in Nebraska and this storm is definitely going to be capable of producing some large hail. Looking at the storm reports as of right now no reports for this particular storm as far as any verified reports of damaging winds or damaging hail. But we'll continue to track that for you. As we go on down the line we have a couple of showers there south of Colorado Springs. None are severe. We have one little tiny severe thunderstorm warning in effect there for Baca County in Colorado about to cross right now. Most of the storm is now crossing into Kansas. I'm also going to point out that even though some of these storms aren't severe warned this storm right here is going to be producing some pretty good rainfall and it's also could produce some uh some small hail as well. So even though you're not you may not be under a severe thunderstorm watch if you're in the or a severe thunderstorm warning if you are in the severe thunderstorm watch region that area definitely heads up here as we head into this evening because we are going to see some strong to severe storms continuing to dominate the forecast. So northeastern New Mexico is where we see the strongest storms right now but as we go on down the line we're still going to see some pretty good storms here from central and the southern parts of New Mexico, far west Texas as well. We'll be watching out for some pretty good storms but we also have some heavy rainfall continuing here across the southeast. As of right now no severe storms but there will be some pockets of heavier rainfall developing pushing into New Orleans. We'll also see some heavier rainfall pushing into Miami as well. So as we head into this evening here's an updated look at our watch that we are tracking there across parts of the high plains and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. This is going to go until 11 o'clock central time. It's going to extend its whole 11 o'clock central 10 o'clock there mountain time. This watch area kind of straddles the time zone there between central time and mountain time. So we're going to watch this very carefully Jeff here as we head into tonight. All right Damian in the northeast by the way we've been dealing with some thunderstorms. Not all bad news here in New England because we need the rain. We've actually seen a developing drought here in recent weeks after a dry August. You can see some downpours into parts of Maine into sections of New Hampshire, Vermont.
