A former special advisor to the DR Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi has been acquitted by a military court.

François Beya, former special security advisor to DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, has been acquitted by a military court of charges that he conspired to assassinate the president. Beya, who was arrested in 2022, had previously held significant roles under past Congolese leaders and was appointed to his advisory position when Tshisekedi took office.

The prosecution's case relied on audio recordings and testimony regarding Beya's criticism of the president, but judges concluded that the evidence was a collection of isolated facts taken out of context and ultimately inconclusive. The verdict follows a three-year closed-door trial.

A former special advisor to the DR Congo's President Felix Shisekedi has been acquitted by a military court. Arrested in 2022, François Beyer was charged with conspiring to kill the head of state. Beyer began his career under the regime of Mobutu Sese Seko and rose through the ranks under Joseph Kabila. When President Shisekedi took office in 2019, Beyer was appointed Special Security Advisor and gained immense power over intelligence and defence matters. But his position also aroused animosity within the presidential entourage. At the end of his three-year closed-door trial, judges found that the prosecution's case was based on a juxtaposition of isolated facts taken out of context. The prosecution argued that Beyer had participated in a plot to assassinate the president and relied on audio recordings of conversations with his colleagues and on testimony reporting his criticism of the head of state. Judges however rejected all of these elements, calling them inconclusive.

Russia carried out one of its largest aerial attacks of the year on Ukraine. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 15, marking Russia’s third-largest drone attack and eighth-largest missile assault this year.
