The U.S. Justice Department is reviewing the handling of a federal investigation into Democratic Senator Adam Schiff of California. The review centers on the conduct of two former Trump administration officials, Bill Pulte and Ed Martin, who previously led investigations into political rivals of former President Trump.

According to CBS News sources, both Pulte and Martin are now subjects of a federal investigation. A witness who had provided a tip related to the Schiff investigation was recently questioned by federal agents in Maryland, but was surprised to be asked about the investigators rather than Schiff himself.

Those two men are Bill Pulte, a housing agency administrator, and Ed Martin, who has several hats he wears inside the Department of Justice. CBS News learned from three sources Bill Pulte and Ed Martin are now the subject of an investigation of their own. That a witness was called to speak to federal agents yesterday in Maryland to ask about some component of the investigations being conducted by Pulte and Martin into Adam Schiff. Lindsay, the witness who testified yesterday to federal agents, or at least interviewed with them, she was expected to talk about Adam Schiff. She had provided a tip that may have led to the Schiff investigation. She was surprised. She was asked about the investigators, not the investigatee. Scott McFarlane, thank you.
