The conference underscored efforts to harness public sentiment to influence policy changes regarding US involvement in the conflict.

Polling shows more Americans support halting Israeli aid

Since last year's inaugural People's Conference for Palestine, grassroots activists have succeeded in breaking through the barriers preventing any discussion of Israel's genocide in Gaza. A recent Quinnipiac poll found that 60 percent of American voters now favor an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. So a theme of Saturday's proceedings was the forces in the U.S. still enabling the genocide, despite that overwhelming public opposition to Israel. There's a particular focus on the nominally progressive wing of U.S. party politics. For example, internationally renowned figures like Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez both have held out against a total arms embargo on Israel. What they're not calculating is that they actually have 75 percent of their base who may or may not vote for them because they are carrying out policy that people actually don't agree with. The U.S.'s labor unions are another example. Chris Smalls succeeded in organizing the first union at an Amazon warehouse in the U.S. He also participated in a recent humanitarian flotilla to Gaza. If you're just joining us, I just want to show you these... The Israelis attacked the vessel he was aboard and singled him out for racial abuse and beatings. For Smalls, the struggle for workers' rights is inextricably bound with the fight for Palestinian liberation. But he says the umbrella leadership of America's unions, the AFL-CIO, is actively stopping grassroots labor activism for Palestine. If our union dudes are going towards politicians that are endorsing genocide, how can they say that they stand with the people of Palestine or even stand with the working class? They have to draw the line and they have to live by the morals that what they created, which is an injury to one is an injury to all. That's everybody. That doesn't exclude Palestinians. The discussion here is about harnessing overwhelming public opinion to end Washington's support for Israel. And a key part of that is understanding who is standing in the way of stopping the killing.
