Fashion designer Romeo Hunte, whose designs have been worn by Zendaya, Michelle Obama and Colman Domingo, joins "CBS Mornings Plus" to discuss his latest New York Fashion Week collection and his rise in the industry.

Our next guest has been taking the fashion world by storm. Romeo Hunt started his brand back in 2014 and quickly caught the eye of some very big names. Maybe you've heard of them. Zendaya, former first lady Michelle Obama, Coleman Domingo have all supported his looks. Recently, he showcased his latest collection at New York's Fashion Week for the upcoming spring and summer season. And Romeo joins us now. We're so excited to have you. Thank you. Thank you for having me. And so you brought someone with you to help show off your looks for this new collection. Can we bring your model out? Hello. Yes, this is pop star Didi J. She's an amazing model. So tell us a bit about this look and your inspiration for this collection. So each season, we always bring it with a statement outerwear, tillered pieces. This season, I just really wanted to take a technique, my denim technique to another level. So this is kind of like a drape, double-breasted blazer belted with a denim belt and layered pinstripe shirt. That's all one shirt. So it looks layered. That's something that we're really good with, with playing with mixed media and mystery layering. And this is kind of all putting together this really cool tillered prep look. And for the fashion curious in our viewership, if they want to be ahead of the trends, where are things going, you think? I think everything is gonna go really like, tillering has been following, it's been very consistent prep. And I do think it's gonna be very much like punk. So this season, I was really more focusing on kind of like rockstar elements, but still keeping it preppy, very tillered and elements of New York street. And so even though summer is ending on the calendar, the fashion week looks are for next spring summer? Yes, yes. So yeah, I'm always like thinking current and then also thinking ahead of what's next. And I do think what's next is gonna be very much that early 2000, link 182 kind of vibes. Oh, nice. So I read that you grew up in New York city, you guys are based here, and that kind of, we're probably at similar age, like the hip hop era has also inspired you very much. But tell us about your coming of age and your exploration of fashion. I read that your mother wouldn't let you wear sneakers as a child, how did that all impact your discovery? It was a big impact. I actually like that my mother actually raised me that way because it was very much like when I was in middle school, I was like, okay, I'm into Jordans, I'm into sneakers, but it was always a mixture between like tailoring prep and going to school and then the street elements kind of like, I was seeing like how, I would take a preppy shirt and wear it oversized or mix it with like high and low sportswear. So I think it's something that definitely followed me throughout my career and it's, if you think about it, it's always mixed media and mixing classic silhouettes for me. We have a paleo archeologist coming up next guest after this, she's got a documentary and it's about the human origins, it's gonna be on PBS. The origins of fashion, at what point in our 300,000 year history as a species did you think we started looking good? Oh, I think the best era was really, let me see. I love the, you know, 90s. 90s is something I always, I can relate to because I think I was like a little kid running around the house watching TV opening magazines and was so excited to see new covers and like the impact of fashion, just kind of influencing pop culture music and across the board, yeah. I remember being in the 90s and thinking, I want, they're not gonna have anything to like say this looks 90s, because when you're in it, it just looks normal. But let's talk about all the celebrities that have worn your looks. Do you have a favorite? Favorite, I can't say, okay. One of my favorites, I would say Michelle Obama. That was really a great moment. It was a surprise too, to be a part of her documentary becoming, so it was amazing. You didn't know she was gonna wear one of your? No, I didn't know. It was a blazer, right? Yeah, it was a blazer. So you just get your phone blows up and it's like, oh my gosh. Yeah, and when it, and everything released, I was like, oh wow, okay, thank you.
