Renowned Nigerian designer, Al Fadi, known as the magician of the desert, returned to his birthplace of Timbuktu this week with a mission that goes beyond fashion, to promote peace and unity in a region scarred by conflict. Through his initiative, La Caravane Al Fadi, the 68-year-old staged a colorful runway show. Modernity is not only in Paris, not only in New York, not only in Japan. Modernity is also here at home, understanding peace between us. Al Fadi, who was born in Timbuktu before moving to Niger, urged Malians abroad to reconnect with their roots and help rebuild their homeland. Let us all come, all those born in Timbuktu, return to your homeland, return to your hometown to work and show that this city is magical. Local officials hailed the event as a powerful symbol of hope. The Al Fadi caravan fits in with our project, which is the rebirth of peace and the development of Timbuktu because it is a caravan of peace and unity. It is a caravan that calls for social cohesion and a caravan that calls for living together. That is why we decided to bring this caravan to Timbuktu. Amid ongoing insecurity in northern Mali, Al Fadi's message of reconciliation and pride resonated deeply.
