A man holding a knife was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy during a holiday event in Imperial Beach Sunday.

A San Diego Sheriff's deputy shot a man during a pow wow event at Imperial Beach Pier Plaza after the man reportedly produced a knife and advanced toward deputies. The man, who witnesses identified as an unhoused local resident, was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Authorities have not released the names of either the deputy or the deceased. San Diego police are leading the investigation and have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

San Diego police leading the investigation say the man had a knife and was moving toward deputies before he was shot in the head. Before the shots rang out. ABC 10 News reporter Ava Kirshner learning more for us tonight after speaking with police and people in the area. Blood was spilled at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza Sunday afternoon after deputies shot and killed a man during a pow wow celebration was left at the scene as an e bike and what's believed to be the man's name is written on the ground. The Christmas pow wow by the sea took a dark turn Sunday. I heard four gunshots north of me here. I looked up the sidewalk and I saw the commotion. So I ran over there and there was a large crowd assembling. According to the San Diego Police Department, Sheriff's deputies were working the event when a man asked to speak with them while they were engaging with that individual. He produced a knife and started advancing on those deputies. Police say a deputy fired off several rounds, hitting the man at least one time. When I first arrived on the scene, he was still moving and breathing and at some point they were administering constant CPR chest compressions until medical showed up. The man was taken to the hospital where he died. Authorities have not yet confirmed his identity, but multiple witnesses who recognized him told ABC 10 News he was an unhoused man. My son's been riding around and his little bike and he's never did any harm to me. The name of the deputy involved has not been released. Anyone who has additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers. The deputy that fired the shot will be interviewed by San Diego police detectives in the department's investigation.
