CNBC's Rick Santelli joins 'Squawk Box' to break down the latest economic data to cross the tape.

The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December increased by 0.3%, matching expectations, while core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose by 0.2%, a tenth lower than forecast. Year-over-year, overall CPI was up 2.7% and core CPI 2.6%, with both indices reaching new all-time highs. 

Market response included a decline in the dollar and a positive reaction in stocks, as analysts noted that inflation is unlikely to fall rapidly to the Federal Reserve's target. Energy prices, influenced by developments in Venezuela, could help moderate inflation, but long-term expectations are for inflation to stabilize between 2% and 3%. The Federal Reserve has projected three rate cuts for 2025.

December core consumer prices rose less than expected

The numbers are coming out for our December read on consumer price index We're expecting a headline number up three tenths of a percent and that it delivered That's exactly what we received up three tenths of a percent now if you look at the previous month in August It was up four tenths September It was up three tenths so this fits right in if you look at X Food and energy known as core on a month over month. It's a tenth cooler than expected It's up two tenths now if you look at year-over-year up two point seven expected two point seven arrives The one glimmer here on the year-over-year is the core comes in a tenth light expectations, but the two point six level is where we've been and My favorite numbers, and they really are my favorite numbers Joe if we look at the index the index on the non seasonally adjusted index this started in 1913 the index number 324 and why is that important because once again? It's a new all-time high pretty much not all the time, but pretty much every month. We get a new all-time high 1913 and if you look at the 1957 rendition which is the core CPI it comes in at 331 and change and of course that's also an all-time all-time high which goes to all the great Conversations you've had on squawk box. We don't want disinflation really we don't want deflation and The compounding nature of what's going on probably isn't going to abate So what's the real answer for all grown-up about this? we're gonna have to grow and we're gonna have to be patient because Time is going to heal this as these prices and various aspects of things like the housing industry Become the new norm and we become less sensitive to where history has been back to you The immediate reaction is right there. We were up negative across the board. There's a dollar down Yeah on race we were 420 on the 10-year earlier or 416 that's been sort of a sort of quiet So what was the and the stock market liked it right? What are they so with what you just said what what is what are traders hanging their hat on primarily at this point Yeah, most likely we're not going to be getting to the Fed's target in any quick fashion But there have been some wild cards that many Traders didn't count on many thought energy would be much more sticky with respect to inflation And we see what's going on whether we agree or disagree But what's going on with Venezuela most likely is going to pay dividends and a lower pricing for Gasoline and in terms of the economy in general I think there are certain areas that over time on a very long glide path can get closer to 2% but I think the general awareness out there is that somewhere between two and three two and a half two and three quarters and some Metrics as high as three is going to be the new normal and we're just all gonna have to get used to that and over Time if it comes down a bit. That'll be a good thing. Hey, listen, the the Fed has given three rate cuts for 2025 and personally, I think that matches the situation we're in
