Recent rumors circulating on social media have falsely suggested that the Yellowstone supervolcano is on the verge of erupting. These claims, often accompanied by AI-generated videos, have caused unnecessary alarm among the public. 

Park officials and scientists have confirmed that there is no abnormal volcanic activity at Yellowstone. Monitoring systems show normal conditions, and there is no evidence of mass animal migrations or other warning signs. Experts emphasize that an eruption is extremely unlikely within the next several thousand years, and any significant activity would be widely detected and reported.

Well, Yellowstone is one of the country's most visited national parks, but social media rumors about the Yellowstone volcano on the verge of eruption are causing a lot of confusion online. Let's bring in CBS News reporter Ian Lee, who is live in Cody, Wyoming in. Okay, so how did these rumors start? Hi, Elizabeth. You know, it's all social media. You see these posts online, and if you don't know anything about the volcano or you're just coming across that, I can see how it can be really alarming because that is a super volcano that would have consequences not for the United States, but for the entire world. You know, I grew up in the greater Yellowstone area, and so we know about the volcano, not really worried about it. But when I saw these posts, I started wondering if it was a bit of a tall tail because I didn't hear anything from folks in the region. And when you look at these videos, you can tell that many of them are a I. So it looks like they were just for engagement and clicks, but they don't seem to have any truth behind them. So they're all phony, totally fake. And what are scientists and park officials saying about this? Are they concerned that these types of rumors are can really take off about their park? I mean, you know, they wanted to stay on top of this, and I reached out to them just to get what you know they were thinking about all this. They said they were aware of it. They said there's nothing going on in the park that's out of the ordinary. They have monitors all over the park. People can go online to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory and look at those monitors and see what's going on. And also, if you saw something really big, you'd probably have a lot of the media like we are in the park checking it out. Things are quiet right now. You know, the one thing, though, is that you do see these videos. They do seem like they could cause an alarm. But the park says, you know, the volcano isn't likely to very unlikely. I should be accurate. They're very unlikely to go off in the next 1000 years or even 10,000 years. There is a chance, but they say it's not possible. They don't believe it's possible. And even if there were seismic activity in the park right now, it would be detected all around the world. And the rumors also were saying that the this erupting volcano or false erupting volcano was also impacting the wildlife, right? Yeah. So you when you look at these videos on social media, you see this exodus of animals. And and so, you know, some of them can be very convincing. I think believe some of them are from other migration patterns. But park officials say there is no big exodus of any animals. And when you actually look at some of these videos, you can see their A. I. And also, you know, if you know how certain animals like bears live, that just seems out of character for them. So the videos can be debunked pretty quickly. All right.
