The storms have ended drought conditions in the state, but many communities are still recovering from significant damage and limited access to utilities. Authorities warn that while the region will dry out briefly, more rain is expected around New Year's Eve.

Turning now to deadly storms wreaking havoc for days across Southern California, from record-breaking rains to flooding and mudslides, Californians are reeling from wild weather tearing through the state. Many were left without power and water, and others had to be rescued from rooftops. Andres Gutierrez has more. The soggy California landscape is preparing for even more rain. Los Angeles, which started the year with the costliest fires in U.S. history, is ending it with the most rain the city has ever seen over Christmas. The atmospheric river that washed through Southern California this week downed trees and left thousands without power during family dinner. Well, it was kind of romantic. Had a Christmas by candlelight. You know, had to eat the cold stuff, but what the heck? The rain has slowed, but the rescues have not, including this one on a Ventura County freeway of a man stuck near a rising river. San Bernardino County was hardest hit by the deluge, leaving homes buried in mud. Residents are now digging out, including Timothy Needham. This trench is the big damage that's going to keep myself and my neighbors from being able to live normal lives. We've followed him since he captured video of his neighbor's rooftop rescue on Christmas Eve, but two days later, he still has limited access to basic utilities. It seems like most people either have water or have power. The water company in the area actually came by and walked over a case of water to us and to my neighbors. All this rain has kept California out of the drought conditions that plagued the state last year, so much needed cheer after a gloomy week. Southern California will be drying out this weekend, but more rain is in the forecast just in time for New Year's Eve. For CBS Saturday Morning, I'm Andres Gutierrez at Altadena, California.
