A year after U.S. President Donald Trump's administration cut funding to its Agency for International Development, USAID, the crisis in Malawi's health care service has deepened. It's undone decades of progress in fighting HIV, malaria and tuberculosis, and severely impacted services like free contraception provided at this family planning clinic. So it's just an appeal from us as an organization to other donors that are out there, but also to the government when it comes to budgeting, to consider looking at what gaps have been left by the withdrawal of USAID funding so that that person in the rural area does not get affected because we know we are likely to lose out on all the successes that we have registered over the years. The NGO, a cornerstone of rural health care, has been forced to halt the mobile clinics that served as the only medical link for remote villagers. Residents have seen a spike in unplanned pregnancies since then. I know of nearly 25 girls in my village who got pregnant when the clinic suspended its services here last year. Now that they've resumed services, I'm sure that cases of early pregnancies will drop because it provides contraceptives and condoms to the youth to ensure that they continue with their education. There's also been a significant reduction in the support, treatment and care for people with HIV AIDS. Researchers estimate that hundreds of thousands of people globally have died in the year since Trump dismantled foreign aid.
