This action follows the temporary suspension of Shein's marketplace in France and the opening of its first physical store in Paris.

The French government is also considering a new tax on small parcels entering the EU and has begun inspecting a large number of Shein packages for compliance. Previous investigations found that a significant portion of Shein's products did not meet EU standards, prompting ongoing scrutiny and potential regulatory changes.

Could Shein be banned in France?

France has actually urged the European Commission to investigate the fast fashion retailer Shein, arguing it is in breach of the bloc's regulations. This is after French authorities moved to suspend the platform over the sale of sex dolls and weapons. Charlotte is joining us in the studio with more on this story. This has been one of the hottest debates this week in France. What the authorities is doing, what's going to happen with Shein, tell us what's going on, Charlotte. Yes, certainly a controversy that has been building up over the week there between the French government and Shein. As you were saying, the French government initiating two potential suspension procedures against Shein after complaints of sales, as you were saying, of childlike sex dolls and weapons like machetes and brass knuckles on its marketplace. Now this was announced just hours after Shein opened its first physical store in the world in a Paris department store, which was seen as controversial already. The French government sent a letter to the European Commission asking it to investigate Shein and shed some light on some malfunctions that led to the marketing of some of these products that are illegal on the platform. Now Europe can find potential platforms for up to 6% of their global revenue if they are in breach of some of the rules, including not checking properly its marketplace there. So the Commission said that it was in touch with Shein to look at the further steps. Certainly Shein temporarily suspended its marketplace in France while it was reviewing its third-party seller and saying it was fully cooperating with Paris prosecutors. But to add extra pressure, we saw a couple of ministers yesterday at the Charles de Gaulle Airport saying that 200,000 Shein packages, old packages arrived overnight, will be looked at and investigated. Normally it's just a tiny fraction that are being looked at. They said the initial findings have already led to reveal noncompliant and illegal products there. They said a previous investigation showed that 80% of items did not meet EU standards. So this will keep rumbling on. Another way that the French government is adding pressure is talking about putting a new tax on small parcels, a conversation that has been happening a little bit already in the EU. For the moment, small parcels under 150 euros don't pay custom duties. This is supposed to end in 2028, but France is putting pressure for this to happen sooner and add this two-euro parcel on each small parcel coming into the EU. So France is adding pressure both on Shein and on the EU level to make some measures and push the investigation on this platform.
