The COP30 UN climate conference is being held in Belém, Brazil, marking the first time the event takes place in the Amazon region. Brazil's president has proposed an international fund to combat deforestation, but the necessary $25 billion has yet to be raised. 

Ten years after the Paris Agreement, leaders admit the world is not on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, with emissions still rising and extreme weather intensifying. The conference is also notable for the absence of a high-level US delegation and shifting global attention to other crises, while calls for concrete climate action grow stronger.

Ten years on from the Paris pledge to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees a sobering message. President Lula, you have called this the cope of truth. I could not agree more. And the hard truth is that we have failed to ensure we remain below 1.5 degrees. The world is still warming, global emissions still rising. Supercharging storms like those lashing the Philippines and Vietnam this week. But there is significant progress in that decade says Guterres. Clean energy is winning in price, performance and potential. What is still missing is political courage. COP30 convenes with a climate skeptic in the White House and for the first time no high-level US delegation. Prime Minister Carney, formerly the UN's climate finance envoy, isn't here. His office says because of the budget vote. Our attention is being drawn to other threats and crises that can seem more pressing. These talks will need to break through the tariff wars and divisive politics. Brazil's president says the era of fine speeches and good intentions is over. People are demanding action.
