Sydney experienced a significant weather change as a southerly wind brought an end to the recent heatwave, causing temperatures to drop by up to 20 degrees within an hour. The shift was accompanied by strong winds that dispersed bushfire smoke from Victoria and the New South Wales south coast, but also caused widespread damage and power outages.

Wind gusts of up to 107 km/h toppled trees, damaged vehicles, and downed power lines, leaving nearly 24,000 homes without electricity. Emergency services responded to over 100 incidents, particularly in areas such as Sutherland Shire, Hornsby, and the northern beaches, while some residents welcomed the cooler weather and improved outdoor conditions.

A shrouded city skyline as heat gave way to a hazy horizon in Sydney. When I woke up I just smelled smoke when I walked outside like a bushfire. It drifted hundreds of kilometres from bushfires in Victoria and the New South Wales south coast. The smoke fanned by strong winds that broke through the grip of last week's blistering heat wave. The southerly change saw temperatures plummet by up to 20 degrees in just one hour. Having gone from heat wave conditions to suddenly very cool conditions within the span of an hour is quite significant. That's Australian weather unfortunately or fortunately whatever you take it. But the danger wasn't over yet. On the Hunter Expressway overnight 27 firefighters contained a blaze that tore through a car and scrub on the highway. While wind gusts of up to 107 kilometres an hour caused headaches across the city. Trees toppled over roads, cars and took down power lines which alongside the heat left almost 24,000 homes in the dark. This street in Greys Point among them. Well I woke up at 7.30 and realised there was no power so I came upstairs and I realised the tree, the branch has fallen down and right onto my neighbour's car. This fallen tree is one of more than a hundred call outs received by SES crews across Sydney since yesterday morning. Residents here in the Sutherland Shire were among the hardest hit but that damage also spread further north including Hornsby and the northern beaches. But for some it brought welcome relief. If anything I enjoy the weather, I like the breeze, nice for a walk with the beautiful wife and the sun. A cool change to put the wind back in Sydneysiders sails. Hannah Stewart, 10 News.
