Initial reports suggested the aircraft was forced to circle the airport and rely on paper maps due to interference, with Bulgarian authorities reportedly suspecting Russian involvement.

However, subsequent statements from Bulgarian officials denied submitting any information about Russian interference, and the Prime Minister stated there was no evidence of prolonged jamming near Plovdiv airport. Independent flight data analysis also contradicted claims of significant disruption, showing the plane maintained a good GPS signal and landed only slightly late. The incident occurs amid broader concerns about increased Russian GPS jamming activity since the start of the Ukraine conflict.

Conflicting reports emerge on GPS jamming of von der Leyen's plane

Assessing claims about alleged Russian GPS interference targeting Vondelayen's plane. Reports that European Commission President Ursula Vondelayen's plane was targeted by Russian GPS jamming as she travelled to the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv on the 31st of August have sparked major speculation. The Financial Times first broke the story on the 1st of September reporting that Vondelayen's plane circled Plovdiv airport for an hour using paper maps to land. We have received information from the Bulgarian authorities that they suspect that this was due to blatant interference by Russia. But days later on the 4th of September, Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister Gorzhan Karajov denied that the government had submitted any information about Russian interference to the European Commission. In an apparent attempt to backpedal on those initial claims, the country's Prime Minister Rozen Zelyazkov said there was no evidence of prolonged interference or jamming of the GPS signal around Plovdiv airport. The Prime Minister later said that although no jamming had been detected by ground instruments, this didn't exclude the possibility of onboard devices detecting jamming. Analysts from Flight Radar 24 told EuroVerify that according to their data, the aircraft maintained a good GPS signal throughout the flight. Their data also contradicted the Financial Times' assertion that the aircraft circled Plovdiv for an hour, as flight records reveal that the aircraft landed only a few minutes late. Although there are a plethora of doubts surrounding this incident, Moscow has intensified GPS jamming targeting planes and ships since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, primarily targeting the area surrounding the Baltic Sea.

Videos circulating online reveal a luminous flying object hitting the vessel. No crew members were harmed. Activists part of the flotilla say they will not be deterred by the attack, and that their mission will continue as planned.
