Colombia on Friday promised to counter the threat from "desperate" armed groups after twin guerrilla attacks killed 19 people and deepened the country's worst security crisis in decades.

A massive truck bomb in Cali on Thursday was the latest of an onslaught of violence in Colombia. This resident was in bed recovering from surgery at the time of the attack. I couldn't feel my hands due to nerves. There were a lot of people screaming and I saw the house completely destroyed. I think I'm still in shock. The next day, Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez paced through the site and announced a new operation to protect the region. Criminal groups have come to a desperation to harm with the most criminal and insane weapon that exists, which is terrorism. He plans to bolster a unit tasked with capturing high-value targets. Targets like Mono Luis are seen here being arrested on Friday, the brother of Colombia's most wanted guerrilla leader Ivan Mordisco. Mordisco abandoned peace negotiations with the government last year. It was a major blow to President Gustavo Petro, who's aiming to demobilise all criminal groups through dialogue. Since then, dissidents, paramilitaries and mafias have upped the ante, subjecting the country to its worst violence in a decade. Hours before the Cali attack, a group in the northwest used rifles and drones to down a police helicopter which was being used to clear cocaine crops, killing 13 officers. And in June, presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbe was shot in the head during a rally in the capital Bogota, dying two months later. Experts predict that rebel groups will continue to step up attacks, asserting their power ahead of Colombia's presidential election next May.
