The decision comes less than a year before Colombia's 2026 presidential election, which will see several of Uribe's allies and protégés competing for the top job. Uribe was president from 2002 to 2010. He was investigated over allegations of witness tampering carried out in an attempt to discredit accusations he had ties to paramilitaries. His case has run for about 13 years, and on Monday, Judge Sandra Liliana Heredia read out her decision to the court, over the course of some 10 hours. Each charge carries a jail sentence of between 6 and 12 years. Judge Heredia also found Uribe not guilty of a separate bribery charge. Now the ex-president is expected to be sentenced on Friday, when it will also be decided whether he will remain free on appeal. Even if the conviction is eventually upheld, he may be allowed to serve his final sentence under house arrest because of his age. Critics and supporters gathered outside the court. Efrain Espinosa, an activist and critic of Uribe, praised the conviction. All Colombians have realized justice can work in this country, and we will believe again in institutions. The judge has itemized in detail all the process throughout the years, and we believe the sentence is consistent, and all the sentences to come will be complete as they're all connected. Therefore it's a relief for us Colombians. Paramilitary groups were demobilized under deals with Uribe's government. But in 2012, he accused a leftist senator, Ivan Cepeda, of orchestrating a plot to tie him to such groups. The Supreme Court in 2018 found Cepeda had not paid or pressured former paramilitaries. Instead the court said it was Uribe and his allies who had pressured witnesses. Colombia's truth commission says paramilitaries killed more than 205,000 people, nearly half of the 450,000 deaths recorded during the ongoing civil conflict.
