A major shift in weather patterns will bring a rapid drop in temperatures across the eastern United States later in the week. Over 221 million people, including those in the Northeast and South, will transition from above-average warmth to significantly colder conditions.

By Thursday, cold air will extend from the Great Lakes down to the Gulf Coast, affecting cities such as Birmingham and Atlanta, where high temperatures are forecasted to reach only the mid-30s Fahrenheit. Overnight lows will be even colder, with some areas experiencing temperatures 13 to 19 degrees below average, and the Northeast running 5 to 10 degrees below normal.

If we skip ahead to Tuesday now, especially with that blistering pink on the map right here now, we're talking more than 221 million people experiencing above average temperatures that does include the Northeast and parts of the South until we get to Thursday and we start to feel those temperatures plummeting from the Great Lakes all the way down to the Gulf Coast. And that will include Florida, by the way. So just know you're going to be grabbing the hoodies and the sweaters as we head toward the end of the week. So this pattern flip will allow that cold air to take over all the way down to the I-10 corridor. In fact, case in point on Thursday, Birmingham, Atlanta only in the mid 30s for a high temperature. Overnight lows, of course, will be even worse. So make sure the kids are well bundled up as we head toward the end of this week. We're going to be far below average as places like Nashville 13 below 19 degrees below average in Atlanta, where we should be in the mid 50s this time of the year, and even parts of the Northeast running anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees below average.
