The first phase of the policy imposes a 25% tariff on such chips, with the White House citing national security and the goal of strengthening the domestic industrial base as key reasons for the move.

A second phase could see broader tariffs implemented after trade negotiations conclude, though details and rates have not been specified. The White House also mentioned potential tariff offset programs for companies investing in US semiconductor production, but specifics remain unclear. Questions about a potential trade deal with Taiwan and its impact on the semiconductor industry remain unanswered.

Chip companies face new tariffs

Welcome back. Chipmakers now facing new tariffs on some imports. Eamon Jaffers in DC with the story. Eamon. Hey there, Sarah. That's right. President Trump said yesterday he's imposing a new Section 232 tariff on semiconductor chips that are imported to the U.S. and then trans-shipped to other markets, citing a national security need to beef up the U.S. industrial base for those chips. The White House says it's setting up a two-phase process. The first is that semiconductors that are imported into the U.S. but are not used domestically will be subjected to a 25% tariff. President Trump described it as a win-win for the United States. We're allowing them to do it, but the United States is getting 25% of the chips in terms of the dollar value, and I think it's a very good deal. Great deal. We're taking billions of dollars, and they've done a fantastic job. But it's not the Blackwell or the Rubin. Now, in the second phase, the White House said that tariffs could broaden out. The White House says that after trade negotiations have concluded, broader tariffs on semiconductors could kick in at a rate they don't specify in the language here, but they describe as significant. They also raise the prospect of tariff offset programs to enable companies that are investing in the United States semiconductor production supply chain to obtain preferential tariff treatment. We don't have all the details on what that might look like, Sarah, so some question marks here, but an effort by the administration to stop trans-shipment of chips, or at least to slow it down and get a tariff on it. Yeah, I think this has been – they've been talking about this for a while. It also raises the question about a Taiwan trade deal. What's going on? That's one of the ones that has not been announced, any sort of framework. And I know Taiwan Semi has exemptions because they billed in the United States, but it's a key question around all this. Yeah, lots of reports swirling around about that, Sarah, but I've been asking officials at USTR and here at the White House whether or not we're close to a deal. No response from anybody on that, so we just don't know. I mean, and that's a big question, right? I mean, where is that going to land? And then how does that relate to, obviously, the tensions with China? That's all still hanging out there, so we're not done with the tariff story for this year. Not by any means, Eamon.
