In a move that may well be worrying to the US and its ally Taiwan, China's most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has officially entered service this week. President Xi Jinping attended the launch.

China has officially commissioned its most advanced warship, the aircraft carrier Fusion, into service as part of its expanding navy. The ceremony, attended by President Xi Jinping and over 2,000 sailors on Hainan Island, was broadcast on state television. 

The Fusion is notable for being the world's largest conventional aircraft carrier and the first of its kind to be fully designed and constructed in China. Experts view the ship's entry into service as a demonstration of Beijing's ambitions to strengthen its naval capabilities and increase competition with the United States.

The new ship, known as the Fusion, is the world's largest conventional aircraft carrier, which is diesel rather than nuclear-powered, like those in the US Navy. It stands out for its high-tech electromagnetic catapult system that allows planes to take off with heavier weapons and few loads. The Fusion is a big deal for Beijing because it's the first to be fully designed and built in China. Although unveiled in 2022, it has taken several years of testing for the ship to become proficient enough to officially enter service. Experts say the Fusion's development is proof of Beijing's plans to assert its naval dominance and increase its military competition with the United States.
