The Chinese government expressed support for South Africa's decision to relocate Taiwan-related institutions and offered to expand cooperation with South Africa in various sectors, including chips.

Taiwan's export controls cover 47 items, such as integrated circuit chips and memory, and were introduced after South Africa downgraded its diplomatic representation with Taipei. China accused Taiwan of political manipulation and emphasized its commitment to supporting developing countries and upholding the global trading system.

The actions from Taiwanese authorities will not have a substantive impact on South Africa's related industries and will only backfire. China appreciates the South African government's firm advancements of the relocation process of Taiwan-related institutions in South Africa, and is willing to expand cooperation with the country in all fields, including chips, to promote greater progress in the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and South Africa. Export controls will now be placed on 47 items, including integrated circuit chips and memory destined for South Africa. China says it's ready to fill in the gap. As the largest developing country, China's statement fully demonstrates the responsibility of a major country. We will continue to pursue high-quality development, expand high-level opening up, actively implement with four major global initiatives, uphold the multilateral trading system, actively participate in WTO reform, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing members, and promote the building of a more just and reasonable global governance system. Taiwan's decision comes in response to South Africa's downgrading and relocation of the country's representative office from the capital city Pretoria. Beijing is accusing Taiwan of engaging in what it calls political manipulation that undermines the global chip supply chain.
