The action is expected to unleash a new wave of federal raids that could sweep through the Windy City as soon as next week. CBS' immigration reporter Camilo Montoyo-Galvez is here with the details. Okay, so when is this going to start and what are you learning about the operation? Hi, Kelly. We are told by two Department of Homeland Security officials that the agency has indeed made internal preparations and plans to conduct a major increase in immigration enforcement operations in Chicago, targeting people who are suspected of being in the country illegally. We are told that the plans involve agents from Customs and Border Protection, CBP, and also Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, the two federal agencies that have really been at the center of the president's government-wide crackdown on illegal immigration. We're also told that a request has been made for a military installation in Illinois to be repurposed, essentially, as a staging area for these operations. We'll see if that is approved by the Department of Defense. And what we are also told is that this could start as soon as late next week, but we have to underscore that these plans could change, especially now that they have been publicly reported. Of course, yes. I mean, the situation is changing very rapidly. You've been on it from the beginning. How does this fit into the administration's broader effort to crack down on what they call sanctuary cities? Well, these Homeland Security sources, Kelly, tell me that this operation could echo those operations that we saw in June in Southern California that prompted and triggered those massive protests against ICE activity in that region. But broadly speaking, this is part of an aggressive operation and campaign by the administration to crack down on counties, states and cities that have so-called sanctuary policies that limit local law enforcement cooperation with ICE by not transferring, for example, criminal non-citizens to immigration authorities. They're also suing some of these cities and threatening to withhold federal funding from a lot of these counties and states.
